What is RNA? RNA, like DNA is a nucleic acid. However, RNA structure differs from DNA structure in three different ways. First, RNA is a single stranded; making it look like half a zipper. Second, the sugar in RNA is ribose, and finally both RNA and DNA contain four nitrogenous bases, but rather than thymine, RNA contains a similar base called uracil (U).

RNA can function as a carrier of genetic information, a catalyst of biochemical reactions, an adapter molecule in protein synthesis, and a structural molecule in cellular organelles.
